Classical Music Festival in Cortland
The Classical Music Festival combines the talents of professionals, students, amateurs and teachers to provide an afternoon of music for the public. New to the festival series will be soprano Laura Enslin. A former faculty member of Nazareth College in Rochester, Enslin has taught voice at Syracuse University since 2005. She earned a master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Enslin recently performed the title role in the Buffalo Philharmonic’s production of Hansel and Gretel, as well as Adele and Nedda in the Rochester Opera Factory's critically acclaimed productions of Die Fledermaus and I Pagliacci, respectively, where she was singled out for her "plush, velvety voice and unfailing sensitivity" (Democrat and Chronicle).
Also new to the festival will be Alex Feiszley, who will begin the afternoon of music at 1:00pm with a piano sonata by Beethoven. Feiszley's teacher, Rick Starmer, will then perform Aram Khachaturain's "Toccata" , and two compositions of his own.
At 1:30 the Madrigal Singers of Cortland High School will sing music from the Medieval and Renaissance periods. The ensemble performance will be followed by individual soloists with Marina Gorelaya and Brian Dobreski as accompanists. The Madrigals are under the direction of tenor Ben Wells. The Madrigal Singers will be followed by guitarist Dave Richman, who will play a combination of classical and popular music for the guitar, from Bach to the Beatles.
Beginning at 2:45, Tekla Babyak will present works on the piano. Babyak, a graduate student in musicology at Cornell University, shares insights into the pieces that she performs, making the music even more interesting. Babyak will be followed by soprano Laura Enslin, who will sing works by Strauss, Bellini, Haydn and Bernstein, accompanied by Marina Gorelaya (piano).
At 3:45 the Celtic harp duo of Lisa Craig Fenwick and Melissa Collins will present music by O'Carolan and other composers, including traditional songs. Lisa Craig Fenwick will also pick up the flute for some harp & flute duos with Collins. Guitarist Chris Woodard will play some his own music for steel string guitar. Finally, the Festival will come to a conclusion with a performance by the Crown City Brass, beginning at 5:00pm.
The Classical Music Festival series is supported by the New York State Music Fund established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. Thanks to the NYS Music Fund, this is one of four Classical Music Festivals organized by Cortland Music this year.
